General Information
You drop off your dog in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon. While at school, your dog will be given an obedience lesson, provided with a conditioning session, and allowed free play time in a fenced area. Each obedience lesson will be one of many that encompasses your dog's training program. Each conditioning session is a part of a total conditioning program geared toward developing the optimal weight and endurance for your dog. In addition, you will be provided with an individualized nutritional plan to enhance your dog's overall health.
The Possum Hollow Doggy Day School is located at 371 CC Lovelace Road in Rutherfordton NC. This rural setting provides for a quiet location where dogs can learn and feel at ease while attending school. Click here for Directions.
All trainers working at Possum Hollow are trained by us and certified in Pet Obedience and Canine Conditioning. Each dog will be assigned a personal trainer. Your dog will develop confidence and trust in his or her personal trainer. This working relationship will allow your dog to learn quicker and develop a better attitude about obedience. Your dog's personal trainer will keep you informed of your dogs progress through regular written updates and notes and will be available to you for questions or concerns.
Each dog is assigned its own resting crate inside our Doggy Day Barn. The Barn is heated in winter and fan cooled in summer. Crates are kept clean and dogs are given fresh water each day. When working, each dog is taken out of its crate on a leash for training or placed inside a fenced area for conditioning sessions, free time with or without other dogs and frequent potty breaks. Only once your dog graduates to off-leash training will it be allowed to work without a leash.
Training programs are
tailored to the needs of each individual dog. Each dog is assigned a
personal trainer to develop and implement the appropriate training
program. Standard training typically involves walking on leash, sit,
stay, lie down, stop, recall, and wait to go through doors. Special
needs may include stopping specific behavioral problems, confidence
building, socialization, and basic manners. All trainers use the
"Natural OrderTM" approach to training which is based on the mother dog's methods of
training her pups and on the way adult dogs communicate with each
other. Training is kind, firm and consistent using positive and
negative reinforcement techniques. All dogs are trained to
be comfortable in a crate. Dogs need a "den" in which they
feel safe and secure. Crates fulfill this need. Dogs are
trained to go into their crate on command and wait to come out until given
a release command. Crate training builds security, confidence and is
immensely helpful in aiding your housebreaking efforts at
home. Obedience sessions are 30-60 minutes for each
dog on any given day. It will likely take
more than one month to train your dog. Different dogs learn at
different rates. Older dogs can learn just as well as younger
dogs. Puppies can learn socialization skills and basic obedience
beginning at 9 weeks.
Dogs that are in need of socialization with other dogs will be placed with other dogs at the request of the owner. Dogs will be allowed free time with other dogs or alone at least once daily. Dogs with more serious emotional, behavioral or physical problems will benefit greatly as a result of the routine of a regular program. Dogs will become comfortable with their school, develop a working relationship with their trainer, and gain confidence through experiencing multiple situations and events that only a busy day school can provide. Through the day school program, your dog can continue to develop a strong bond with you and still get the training, conditioning and handling it needs to be a well-rounded companion.
Dogs that are out of shape, overweight or lacking in pulmonary or cardiac endurance are at risk for many, many health problems. The vast majority of dogs receive less than 1% of the exercise they require to maintain a healthy body. Click here to read more about Canine Obesity. Conditioning programs are designed to be fun and stimulating for your dog. At Possum Hollow we offer programs for overweight, underweight and out of shape dogs that can easily be added to your dog's Day School schedule. "You are what you eat" is just as appropriate for dogs as it is for humans. Dogs enrolled in the Overnight programs will be fed Flint River Ranch Super Premium All Natural Dog Food. This food is made with human grade ingredients and contained none of the common allergens, fillers, or chemical preservatives of most other foods. Your will be given only high quality, nutritional treats in moderation while at school. Your dog will be provided fresh water that is regularly tested for quality. Your personal trainer will be happy to discuss methods of weight control that you can use at home.
Day School dogs can attend FREE weekly group lessons where you, your dog and your trainer can work together within a group setting. Private lessons are also available at a reduced fee by appointment. You will work with your dog and your dog's personal trainer to learn how to handle and maintain your newly trained and conditioned dog. Your primary responsibility is dropping off and picking up your dog. Homework consists of practicing good handling skills and monitoring your dog's nutritional needs. The rest is up to us!
