What are the advantages of having a CGC certified dog? The CGC program is an excellent first step in the training of your dog. It is the AKC recognized foundation for dogs desiring to compete in AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. Many therapy dog and search and rescue dog organizations require CGC certification prior to entry into their program or certification by their organizations. Many home owners insurance companies are now offering reduced rates if your dog is CGC certified. Who is elligible for CGC certification? Any dog of any breed or mixed breed can become a CGC dog. After taking the Possum Hollow CGC class, dogs will be given a short test that evaluates the dog's manners, appearance, and overall basic obedience skills as they would apply to a home or community setting. Many CGC evaluations will include some distractions that are common in a therapy setting (such as crutches, wheelchairs, etc.) to fulfill the requirements of therapy dog organizations. How long are the classes and when are they offered? Possum Hollow offers one or two CGC class per year (additional classes may be offered if demand is high). The CGC class at Possum Hollow includes ten (10) sessions lasting one hour each. The classes are designed to prepare your dog to pass the CGC test. A CGC test will be offered shortly following each course (or information will be provided for locating a test site).
